FAQs

How can I obtain a copy of a police report?
Your may call the Records Unit at (954) 746-3500 to request a report and obtain fee information. Reports are generally processed within five working days, and may be picked up at the City's Public Safety Complex, located at 8330 N.W. 27 Place.

Where can I get employment fingerprints taken?
Fingerprinting is available only to City of Sunrise residents, and is provided free of charge. To have your fingerprints taken, please go to the Police substation at the Village Civic Center (6800 Sunset Strip) or the New River Civic Center (60 Weston Road) between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. These substations can be located using our City Facilities map.

How can I claim property that was stolen from me and recovered by the Sunrise Police?
First, it is important that you file a police report as soon as possible after the theft occurs. When your property is recovered, you will be contacted by the Evidence and Property Unit and asked to retrieve the item(s). You must come to the Police Department with photo identification and, if possible, proof of ownership. Property that is marked with an identifying number is easier to trace and return.

How can I start a Neighborhood Watch in my community?
To learn more about Neighborhood Watch programs, including how to start one, please call the City's Office of Community Policing at (954) 746-3384.

How do I report a traffic-related concern?
Any traffic concerns are best directed to our Traffic Unit at (954) 746-3387.

My daughter is interested in the Police Explorer program. Who do I call for details?
The Police Explorer program is open to young men and women ages 14 to 20 who have completed the eighth grade, and are interested in learning about law enforcement. For more information, please call the Department's Youth Coordinator at (954) 746-3653.

How do I take care of a parking ticket or traffic citation?
If you received a parking ticket, your options are listed on the back of the citation. If you received a traffic ticket, your options depend upon the type of infraction for which you were cited. For additional information, please call our Traffic Unit at (954) 746-3386, or refer to the Web site of the Broward County Clerk of the Courts.

I was the victim of a crime. Do I have any specific rights?
Yes, you do! The Florida Legislature recognizes that many innocent persons suffer as a result of criminal acts. This may, in turn, result in hardships for the victim and/or their dependents. To find out about your rights in this matter, please contact the Sunrise Police Department's Victim Advocate at (954) 746-3536.

What is the difference between criminal profiling and bias-based profiling?
Criminal profiling is a legitimate tool in the fight against crime. It is an investigative method in which an Officer, through observation of activities and environment, identifies suspicious behavior by individuals and develops a legal basis, consistent with the Fourth Amendment, to detain and question.

Bias-based profiling refers to a decision by an Officer to stop, detain, interdict, or search an individual based on race, color, gender, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, or national origin.

It is the policy of the Sunrise Police Department to prohibit bias-based profiling in all Police-initiated actions. These include all investigative detentions, field contacts, traffic contacts, arrests, searches, asset seizures and forfeiture efforts. An Officer's actions will be based on a standard of reasonable suspicion or probable cause as required by the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and statutory authority. Officers must be able to articulate specific facts, circumstances and conclusions which support reasonable suspicion for an investigative detention or traffic stop, or probable cause for arrest. Officers shall not consider race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, gender identity or sexual orientation in establishing either reasonable suspicion, probable cause, or as a basis for requesting consent to search.

How can I commend a Police employee's superior performance?
If you wish to commend the actions of any Sunrise Police Department employee, you may communicate your praise verbally to the employee's supervisor, or write a letter to the Police Chief. For more information, please call (954) 746-3600.

How can I register a complaint regarding a Police employee?
Please direct your complaint to any on-duty Police supervisor, or contact the Department's Internal Affairs Unit at (954) 746-3351.

Will my neighbor know that it was me that called and reported a code violation at his/her property to the Code Enforcement Division?
The Code Enforcement Division investigates all complaints reported. Anonymous complaints are not recommended, as it is difficult for the division to keep the complainant up to date on the case's status. City records are public information and, as such, the public has the right to view code enforcement complaints and learn who the complainant is. However, many neighbor-against-neighbor complaints could be easily resolved with good old-fashioned communication.

Is there a reason the Code Enforcement Division can't resolve complaints immediately?
Yes: The answer is due process of law. All Code Enforcement offices throughout the state must abide by the rules and processes prescribed in Florida Statute 162. This statute provides for due process of notification, reasonable time to comply, a hearing process, and penalties for non-compliance. The City of Sunrise utilizes a Special Master who hears cases on a monthly basis and has the power to assess fines for non-compliance. In all cases, the Code Enforcement Division is committed to assisting violators in resolving problems in a timely manner. In cases of public nuisance, Notices to Appear in Civil Court may be issued immediately, but may not be heard by a Court Judge for 45 to 60 days.

Can I place signs on the street if I am having a yard sale?
Sunrise residents are permitted to place no more than two yard sale signs on their own property. Signs that are taped or wired to trees or sign posts, or placed in the medians or roadsides are not allowed, and will be removed and disposed of by Code Enforcement Officers. There is a City Code Enforcement Officer on duty every weekend.
